The Masterpiece

The Mona Lisa (or La Joconde, La Gioconda).

Leonardo studied the painting and was not satisfied with the direction it was going. He’d spent hours brushing it up but Leonardo wasn’t convinced, when the Lady La Gioconda sat down for the portrait, it was easy but now, putting finishing touches to it seemed like a herculean task. In anger, he yanked it off and took it to his sparsely furnished room and hid it under the bed.

Straightening up, he sauntered outside his room, staring mournfully at his tools, he felt no inspiration, nothing. His mind was dead, his brains passive, his emotions bland and then out of the blues, he saw a rat.

His brown eyes followed the rat everywhere, the more he scrutinised it, the more he felt the fluttering of visions and hope surge in his heart. He hurried back to his room, gently drag the painting from under its hiding place and resumed work. His flurried hands began the arduous task of creating the masterpiece that would be one of the most important paintings of all time. With his hand under his chin, he surveyed his handiwork and was quiet satisfied at the result.

Alas, behold Mona Lisa.

I believe we are all masterpiece in our own little world but let me play with your imagination a bit…

I was  Lisa del Gioconda née Gherardini  now a writer living in London.

Have you ever felt that lingering sensation that you’ve lived before, in eras long gone? I am  a writer so it is very easy for me to transport myself to 1479 when I was born to 1542 when I died. So if I was the Lady La Gioconda, what did I do except pose for a painting which is now one of the most famous paintings of all time? I wish she did more than just sit down for a portrait commissioned by her husband, maybe supported a just cause, a charity, gave to the poor?

Lisa was not known nor celebrated in her time, she lived a peaceful simple life, records had it she loved her husband… or they loved each other (I am a hopeless romantic, spare me!)

So, here is the deal… How would you loved or want to be remembered? Let’s say in the next five hundred years, what would people say or write about you?

Just give it a thought guys because I am dying to know!

Drake dodged bullets flying past as he engaged the enemy in mortal combat, his platoon mate was shooting rapidly, his face contorted in war rage as they moved into enemy territory, by the end of the night, his friend laid beside him dead. They counted their losses, evacuated the wounded and retreated back to camp.

Lying down on his bunk bed, Drake’s exhaustion and the death of his friend temporarily took a backstage as he gazed admiringly at the picture of his bride of  twelve months. She was his saving grace, the few letters she wrote to him gladden his heart but it wasn’t the same like seeing her in the flesh. Her picture was also his only source of comfort and in a way, he would survive his stint at the war front only because her thoughts gave him strength.

The war dragged on longer than expected and after twenty-four months, he came back home unexpectedly. The cab driver dropped him in front of his house and he walked slowly to the front door, his heart beating with excitement. But he held it all together and knocked the door, there was no response but he saw someone peeping through the window.

Finally after waiting for about ten minutes which seemed like ten years, Anna opened the door by an inch, Drake’s broad smile was met with stony silence.

”Hello darling,” Drake crooked out in what he thought was a normal voice, but his wife said nothing and she also had problems looking up.

Drake’s intuition was to push her back into the house and then he saw the protruding tummy. It didn’t take him long before he made mental calculations  to know that he was not the father, his bag dropped to the ground with a thud and he felt faint.

And then he heard the unmistakable voice of his friend, who couldn’t be drafted to the war because of an illness.

”Honey who was that?” Jonas called out from the room and they both heard footsteps, Anna’s eyes was still drawing maps on the ground beside her husband.

Jonas pulled the door back to show his rumpled pyjamas and hairy legs. Drake doesn’t need a soothsayer to tell him what has gone on while he was away fighting for his country.

Jonas retreated back to the safety of the living room while Anna finally found her voice,

”I am sorry,” she said and wanted to touch him.

Drake’s dream was over, his visions for a happy family crashed like a pack of dominoes at his feet. Ever so slowly, he picked up his bag and turned away from his home…

If you were Drake, what would you do?

Most of you must know by now that I am a story-teller and I guess it runs in my genes. My mum would keep you enraptured for hours on end about tales and rib cracking jokes, my dad would look on smiling just adding titbits to the tales.

And I have one good news, the second edition of my novel, ”The Feet Of Darkness” would be out soon and I would love the candid opinions of my friends.

The Watchman

The angel fell down with a thud and grabbed hold of Arianna, she spurned round and screamed, her eyes turned red and her mother shook her so she could come back to reality.

”You’re safe now, it was all a dream,” she whispered stroking her hair and singing softly until she slept again, her head in her mother’s arms.

Arianna’s mom gently laid her on the bed and pulled the duvet up to her chin and silently tiptoed out of the room but before she closed the door, her daughter whispered,

”He is with me mom, I am no longer afraid.”

A light shone above her head while a huge mysterious man sat by the window pane, watching her sleep. The night was quiet but Arianna’s snoring was like a slow ballad in a quiet night. The man watching sleep smiled and waited, he would stay with her until dawn and for the rest of her life.

Her mother smiled and closed the door, but she lingered outside her daughter’s door, listening for any sound but she heard nothing and then she walked to her own room, safe in the knowledge that Arianna’s sleep will no longer be punctuated with nightmares.

But is Arianna safe?

This is just a short illustration intended for this post.

Like Arianna, we live in a world fraught with dangers but we need to have an anchor, someone we can trust, somebody to run to when the going gets tough, someone to sing with in time of jubilee, and someone to talk to in our moment of fear.

We cannot leave our lives to chance, blown about by every wind of doctrine, we need a watchman, someone to care for our soul, to give us a reason for living.

I believe nobody was born as a mistake, there is purpose to every life, a reason for our existence.

I have found mine, have you found yours?

6.am, January 26, 2002.

This is a true story, please read on.

They left their house optimistic about the new baby that would soon grace their home, the husband helped his beaming, but heavily pregnant wife into their brand new Toyota Carina‘s car and they zoomed out of their new house en route the hospital.

12 hours later… At 11pm. The baby’s head was not descending.

”Too big,” the junior doctor on duty murmured and decided on a caesarean section, a process where they would surgically remove the baby. They paged the consultant who came to the hospital within fifteen minutes. As the wife was slowly wheeled into the theatre, she saw her husband by the door, he looked tired and petrified, he had been a sentry all day at the hospital reception, waiting for his wife and new son to come out.

She touched his hand and whispered with tears in her eyes, ”I am so sorry, I tried,”

”It’s okay darling, I’ll be waiting for you, I love you,” and he kissed her on the cheek, and she disappeared into the theatre, and the battle began.

A forty-five minutes operation turned into two, three, four hours… The anaesthetic applied was three times over the limit and the drug shut down her heart, the mistake was to set in motion a series of errors which ended in tragedy…

*******

The consultant’s brows creased up in a frown, everything that could go wrong did, and he was very close to this particular patient, he was quite fond of her and her new husband. What he loved about them was their love for each other, so he would do everything within his power to make sure she did not die on his watch.

”Time of death, 2.21 am,” a young doctor announced, he had been on his feet all day,  he’d managed a toasted bread since morning and was teetering towards exhaustion. Nurses had been on strike at the general hospital for a week, and he had been on duty almost every day, keeping his eyelids open was a herculean task.

”No,” the consultant snapped,  ”charge the defibrillator to two hundred.” They did, and there was a beeping sound on the machine, which indicated the heart was regularly beating, sighs of relief permeated the atmosphere as the consultant worked feverishly to bring the baby out. With that part over, the baby who was blue due to lack of oxygen was quickly taken to the neonatal intensive care. The doctor was sewing her up when there was another flat line.

The stubborn doctor performed external chest compression, and the defibrillator ( a machine used to send an electric shock to the heart to make it work again) was used to charge her heart again, and it worked, but only for a few minutes and the third time her heart stopped, the doctor wanted to call it. He asked a nurse to page another consultant while he ordered one of the junior doctors to start external chest compression and he fled the theatre.

Outside, he saw the husband sitting down, looking lost and very tired. When the husband heard approaching footsteps, he jumped to his feet and blurted out.

”How is my wife, is she okay?” The doctor swallowed hard before replying.

”There was a technical problem about the anaesthetic, and I am so sorry.” But the words got stuck in his throat, he couldn’t bring himself to say his wife was dead. Instead, he grabbed his hands and promised, ”your wife would be fine, have you seen your son?”

”Yes,” the husband replied with his voice trembling, ”he doesn’t look too good,”

The doctor nodded and rushed back to the theatre, the junior doctor was still performing the compressions. The consultant took over as two senior doctors entered the theatre, and they fought to save the life of this young wife.

*****

7th February 2002.

The husband sat down in his living room surrounded by family and friends, they prayed, they cried, and they left.

And he was alone… there was no crying of a newborn infant, just dead silence.

He sat alone, staring into space. And then his wife walked in from the room, and he stood up, they hugged.

He was no longer alone. Their son did not survive, but the wife did. They have another chance to start again, they mourned for Angel, their son, but knew they would see him again on heaven’s shores.

03 December 2002.

Eleven months later, they welcomed another son into their home, and their joy was full, it was a miracle.

Four years later, a daughter came and another four years later, another son.

And they said the Lord has been merciful…

I was (is) that woman… And my husband… well he was (is) the…husband. I believe in second chances, I was dead, but I am alive again! Don’t you think that was so sweet?

Sunday Prayers

Sunday Prayers (Photo credit: Steven Leith)

This unfortunate incident happened late last year and anytime I think about it, tears usually welled up in my eyes.

It was a Sunday morning, we were sleeping soundly when I heard a loud banging at the door, still in my sleepy state I leapt up from the bed but before dashing downstairs my husband caught the tip of my dressing gown.

”Where on earth do you think you’re going,” he asked with a frown before standing up, then he released my dressing gown.

”I heard a loud banging and I decided to check who was at the door,” I explained with a yawn and that was when we checked the wall clock. It was a few minutes after six in the morning. I crawled back into bed, grateful for a strong man in the house but some  days were just horrible.

Seconds later, I heard a man talking rather loudly downstairs but my husband was trying to pacify the caller. It was obvious my beautiful sleep had been abruptly terminated for the day so I decided to check who the unreasonable caller was.

I slipped into my slippers and padded downstairs and then I saw him. He was fuming and gesticulating with his hands, the only words I heard was this,

”I have sent her packing out of my house,”

I hissed and went back to my room shaking with what I surmised must have happened and my heart went out to my friend and I could just picture her tear-stained face. Her beautiful, clear skin marred with mud and blood, her finger nails cracked, her heart-broken into a million fragments. And I offered a prayer for her safety.

The caller was a violent egocentric maniac whose wife was a very good friend of mine. She was very secretive, evasive about the bruises, when I asked she never could explain why she kept falling on the stairs every week, was she blind? And the babies? The miscarriages, the constant admissions, scans, the endless sorrow but she is free at last, safe from the beast in human form, safe from the fear, safe from the heat and the fury.

He is empty, worthless than a speck, and he is in a prison of his own madness.

What can I say? My friend is free from the brawls, and from that emptiness of a marriage. I believe in everlasting love, a love without fear, without sorrow…

Just Imagine…

Imagine if Hitler had not died and world war II was lost?

What would be our Hope? Probably the whole of Africa would be a sugar cane plantation by now…

Imagine if Nuclear Bomb was never made, we might not have won world war 2 because Japanese people would definitely fight to the death, but there won’t be a cold war either and threats of more wars from so called superpowers, just imagine…

Imagine if all the souls lost in the fields of battle had not gone, Imagine if fear gripped their hearts? What exactly would be our fate?

Thank God they fought and won. God bless those wonderful souls…

Now… Just Imagine you got all your wishes… All your prayers, what if they came to past?

Imagine what would happen if you won the lottery…

Close your eyes now… Imagine you are GOD!

What would you do?

Your Life Does Matter!

Every one has dealt with issues in their lives, and sometimes, fear can rear its ugly head when you least expected. But constantly dwelling on your fears or weakness just reinforces it.

Which brought my wedding day to my memory, it was only a few hours away, my heart was light and suddenly the sun shone brighter, the leaves appear greener and Yogi, my teddy bear who has been my constant support throughout my growing years was looking radiant. Its fur was worn out and all its fluffiness was a distant memory but I still loved my Yogi, it was my birthday present when I was ten and fifteen years later, it was still by my side.

Then my dad walked into my room in the midst of the laughter and preparations, my friends were crammed inside, each one trying to outsmart the other with tales of years gone by, he beckoned me to follow him and I did, I was grinning like a Cheshire cat, I was getting married and the whole world is at peace, what more could I wish for?

”You will not find life smooth sailing every day Seyi,” he said closing the door of his room and staring straight into my eyeballs. My mood plummeted like a pack of cards as I watched the fleeting emotions on his face, did I perceived fear?

”You will face life threatening situations, just dig deep and you find the courage to fight off any adversary.”

”Why dad? Why speak of trouble, why not of triumphs and victories,” I countered.

He smiled and the dimples on his cheeks deepened.

”Because you cannot taste victory without first going to war and triumph cannot know your abode without a confrontation, that is the way life is, just have this at the back of your mind, your life does matter.” he replied and gave me a bear hug, patting me on the shoulder and I left his room.

Days later, his words haunted me and I was scared because the picture he painted was not rosy but he knew better, he’s been married for fifty years, they’ve endured unimaginable pressures and problems and they came out unscathed but more strengthened than ever.

My parents have enjoyed wealth and poverty, they’ve planted and reaped bountifully yet sometimes the store houses were empty and the ravaging wolves of poverty and disease attacked from all corners but they stood firm in their faith in the God of their lives and like he said, they’ve triumphed.

My dad is tipping towards the twilight of his life, he has failed severally and won many battles, he’s human and his weaknesses sometimes threatened to overwhelm him and when I think of how quick time flies my heart shudders with what would be and what could have been.

Peter Nelson is my father and I am proud to be his daughter, he once told me my life matters and I believed him because he was saying the truth.

Your LIFE matters too, you just have to believe me!

I am sure it does!!

If I Were A Fox…

Fox on Ice

Fox on Ice (Photo credit: mtsofan)

Foxes are known to be largely territorial animals and even though I don’t have any pets in my house (my daughter has played out every trick in her little brain to make me get her a puppy, but I hate cleaning up after dogs, cats, yak! And…, I have to confess that I was bitten by a dog once, like centuries ago! So you can understand my hesitation, I would really love a horse though but my husband would have none of that, till we hit the lottery I guess!) But I really admire foxes, and I don’t know why and I can’t seem to find out where the attraction came from.

I was washing dishes in MY kitchen today (notice that ‘my,’ isn’t that territorial in nature?) when I saw a fox whizzed past the garden (it can’t get in though, our fence had been reinforced) probably it was just scavenging, looking for food for its kittens and I just smiled, because I love the sight of a fox and it is a very strange thing to admit but I do (Yak! You may say)

They are not seen as animals to be admired, It is included among the IUCN‘s list of the “world’s 100 worst invasive species” and this phrase ”little foxes spoil the vine,” really refers to sin in scripture because we strive to be good at times, but we just find out we are failing, it’s just the foxy nature in us.

I live in a part of London where red foxes can stray into your garden and into your living room if care is not taken, you really have to make sure your fences are quiet strong to dissuade them from paying you a visit. Some couples of months ago, foxes were in the spotlights for creeping into people’s homes, wrecking havoc and even attacking babies! And it struck a chord within me, sometimes, we are our worst enemies, it’s a harsh statement but it’s the gospel truth.

The way those foxes were destroying homes can be sadly liken to the way we sometimes ruin our lives with our own hands (I am just generalizing here though)

If that is not the case, why would a beautiful lady with a bright future ahead of her allow a man molest her for money, why would a boy join a gang and kill to get respect? Why on earth would I want to be a fox? Why can’t I aspire to be a lion (king of the jungle) or an elephant (king of kings of the jungle) why would a mother smoulder her own children to death? Why would a man kill his children then himself to get back at his wife?

Why would I want to be a Fox?

I just wonder…

I guess it’s that wild streak inherent in every human… Maybe I am wrong or right, do let me know!

Love’s Eternal Struggle!

FALLing in Love

FALLing in Love (Photo credit: atkinson000)

When I was in university, I was a diehard fan of happily ever after novels, those little Mills and Boon paperback where the dashing handsome (and often wealthy) man always falls in love with the pretty, saintly secretary. I was a sucker of the phrase ”love conquers all” but my myopic views about love was to be shattered in a bizarre incident and though it was restored back, it took a while for me to fully grasp the enormity of that simple phrase. But I am not going into that today, maybe some other time.

The phrase, ” love at first sight” is flawed and that is my opinion, it should be adjudged as ”lust at first sight,” and believe me folks there is real love, because I love my husband and I know he loves me but in the world we live in now, that doesn’t seemed to be enough. Sex has taken over, and it’s been like that for a long time.

Men by nature are naturally moved by what they see, women too, are moved by the sight of a handsome man. I like the sight of a well dressed man but still, I am not moved by that because I am totally committed to my marriage and guys don’t get me wrong, I am not inferring that men can’t love truly but the percentage of men who fall by the way side is considerably higher.

The number one killer of any relationship is unfaithfulness, infidelity, adultery, you name it and human beings are territorial, nobody loved the idea of sharing the person they sincerely love with another.

One of my girlfriends once told me she was in love with three guys and can’t seemed to choose the right one. I was mortified, how can you be in love with two-three guys at the same time? That’s just not possible… I know people might consider my opinion as naive but really, can you love four people equally? Citing the case of Islam where men are allowed to marry more than one wife, four? That’s impossible, there is no way you can rationalise it, it can’t work!

Love will continually struggle to make sense of how people easily thrash it in the can, I know love is not enough in marriage, there must be mutual respect, fidelity, trust, selflessness, kindness, the list is endless, but love is an integral part of it. Without love there is no basis for any relationship in the first place.

In a society where people arrogate great importance to the physical attributes of a woman, and the financial capabilities of a man, love will continually struggle. A successful relationship will bear many scars but its workability depends on the extent of commitment  and the ability and willingness to work it out no matter what may happen.

Sadly, divorce is rampant, but many could have been avoided and children caught in the crossfire of warring parents would have been spared the agony but these innocent children through no fault of their own will be scarred by the brutality of it all. Children don’t understand, they can’t! Why is daddy moving away?, why is mummy leaving home? These are the kind of questions kids asks when their parents split.

Maybe my views is truly myopic but I think love can still conquer all…

Do you honestly believe me?
